San – Princess Mononoke

San – Princess Mononoke

I chose to do San from Princess Mononoke because I have a thing for strong female roles, she is wild, fierce and unforgiving and I couldn’t think of a better match! Princess Mononoke was probably the one of the first Studio Ghibli movies that I had seen as a pre-teen.  It spoke to me the most seeing I have a great fondness for wolves or foxes so I knew that at some point I would need to cosplay her and the fields of ColossalCon where a perfect back drop.

The first thing that I started on once I decided to make San was her iconic blue dress and apron. I went into this as if this could be her costume in a live action film, I wanted it to be as raw and durable as she is darting through the forest.  I created a basic dress pattern and then transferred that to the navy blue, 2 way stretch ripped cotton blend. After fitting the dress I immediately started ripping the bottom hem and distressing it as if it had been torn on tree limbs and rocks. For her apron I just eyeballed the shape on a heavy canvas material and adjusted it to fit with two suede ties on each side. The most fun part of the costume to make were surprisingly my shoes! She  traditionally has a little pair of brown boots but I wanted to go with something a little cooler looking and made some trapeze boots out of the same canvas and ties them up with the same suede string and modified a pair of flip flops to tie around the boots.  I lucked out on some of the small details, I found them and modified most of it into the necklace, earrings and shall closings. I specifically did not want to go with her iconic white fur shall and did more of a darker patterned fur for a more realistic look and attached the mask and ears my good friends at Gemini Minds made. The biggest difference I think that my San has to offer is that I did so much natural distressing to the costume and kept the makeup natural and organic as if it was done in the wild.
